The date was January, 2014. The event was strangely called “Snowpocalypse,” even though most of the accumulation in the Metro Atlanta area was Ice. Where were you? If you were anywhere near downtown or Metro Atlanta, you probably have a very distinct memory of where you were, and for how long you were stuck there. Some were stuck on I-20 for 16 hours? Some were locked down on I-285 for 20+ hours? And some folks were jammed in their automobiles 75/85 for 26 hours or more?! Bewildering. Frustrating. Mind-blowing. How in the world did 2 inches of Ice reduce the entire Metro Atlanta area to a level-9, apocalyptic, full-on roadway shutdown?
On a more serious note, Snowpocalypse did teach Georgians a lot about preparedness. More than anything else, Snowpocalypse 2014 showed Georgians how quickly, and seemingly ridiculously, that a relatively small ice storm can paralyze an entire city. And when powerlines started snapping, guess who couldn’t get anywhere? That’s right! Georgia Power trucks, Greystone Power vehicles, or whichever service repair fleet from your local EMC or power company, they were all just as paralyzed as the fine citizens who were stuck on interstates and other metro roadways.
For those who could make it home when the ice storm hit, they could at least be out of their vehicle, change their clothes, and be in the comforts of their own home. For those who made it home, and had power, the situation was smooth sailing. But for those who made it home, only to find their power was out, indefinitely, the joy of being home was quickly deflated. How many folks do you think WISH that they had installed a generator? That answer would probably be very close to exactly the same number of people who lost electricity. But there is good news! The next big freeze doesn’t have to leave you frozen! When Ice Storms hit, you need to find a backup power source in Georgia. Call Anderson Power Services today! Before the next storm happens!
