With the 43rd Annual National Wheelchair Games quickly approaching, competitors are making final preparations to compete in a wide range of events. However, with only weeks left to make arrangements, two former gold medalists were recently informed that they would not have the expected funding for the week-long hotel stay in New Orleans, LA.
Jonathan Tubbs and Willian Green have participated in the National Wheelchair Games for more than a decade, winning dozens of medals between the pair. The teammates were devastated to learn that they would not be able to compete in this year’s competition due to the last-minute budget decision of a third-party.
When Stephen DaValt, Veterans Support Sales Associate for Anderson Power Services, heard about the debacle, he sought a resolution to the matter. DaValt immediately contacted Kevin Anderson, founder of Anderson Power Services.
“I brought the situation to the attention of Mr. Anderson, and he did not hesitate to offer funding for these two veterans,” said DaValt.
Anderson, a veteran of the United States Air Force, moved quickly to ensure that both Tubbs and Green secured a week-long hotel reservation, allowing them to once again take part in the National Wheelchair Games.
“As a veteran-owned company, we are always proud to support our veterans in any way we can,” said Anderson. “We’re honored to assist Mr. Green and Mr. Tubbs so that they can be a part of the National Wheelchair Games this year. This competition is so important to many veterans and we want to support them as much as we can.”
Anderson founded his company on the skills and experience he gained while serving in the Armed Forces. While enlisted, Anderson was responsible for servicing and managing generators, keeping his fellow soldiers safe and secure by providing power to a wide range of vital infrastructure.
Upon being honorably discharged, Anderson leaned on his expertise in servicing, installing and maintaining backup power generators. He established Anderson Power Services in 1995 and the company has grown from “one man in a van” to the biggest backup power providers in the southeastern United States.
Both Green and Tubbs traveled to Anderson Power Services headquarters in Douglasville, Georgia to personally thank Anderson for his efforts. Tubbs noted that the Games have become a lifeline to him, and many other veterans, as it provides the opportunity to connect with service members across the country.
“This is one of the greatest motivators that I really look forward to every year,” said Tubbs. “It’s something that keeps me going, keeps my enthusiasm up, and makes me really go for it because now I’ve got something worth living for. I know there are so many veterans out there who committing suicide every day. I could have been one of them if it wasn’t for people willing to offer help.”
The event was held in July 2024 with both athletes competing in multiple levels of competition, earning various medals for their efforts. To find out more, please visit wheelchairgames.org.
